POSTPONED: Trade, growth and welfare impacts

NTU-SBF Centre for African Studies hosts a bi-monthly breakfast series during which topics of relevance for Africa and those interested in Africa will be addressed. Experts in their fields will be invited to convey their points of view.

Africa is the scene of a number of trends, impacting the poltical, economic, social, technological, environment and security dimensions, to name but a few. These trends are bringing about changes that are important for politicians, government officials, business executives and entrepreneurs to take note of.

Dr Nicolas Depetris Chauvin, Deputy Director of the NTU-SBF Centre for African Studies, will provide a comprehensive and cohesive analysis of the likely effects of a Continental Freee Trade Agreement (CFTA) in six African countries. The analysis considers four incremental liberalization scenarios. The first scenario consists of the elimination of tariffs for agricultural goods. In the second scenario we add the elimination of tariffs on manufactured goods. The third scenario adds a fifty percent reduction in non tariff measures (NTMs). Finally the last scenario considers also a thirty percent reduction in transaction costs associated with time. The analysis shows that the trade, growth and welfare gains for each African country would depend on the modalities of trade liberalization. We will also show that the CFTA would lead to asymmetric changes in trade patterns among African countries and within countries across sectors.

Attendees can expect to gain insights into the following:

  • Understanding the potential futures awaiting Africa economic integration and the business opportunities associated with this process
  • Understanding the growth potential of different economic sectors in Africa
  • Understanding the changing nature of trade relations between African countries and of Africa with the world
